Who We Are
Domestic violence (also called family violence) is a pattern of behavior and a method of control. One person dominates other household members by physical violence and/or psychological abuse. You can call the toll-free, 24-hour Virginia Family Violence/Sexual Assault Hotline at 1-800-838-8238.
To report adult abuse or suspected financial exploitation or other kinds of abuse to the elderly or adults with a disability, call your local Department of Social Services or the Adult Protection Services (APS) Hotline at Toll Free: 1-888-832-3858.
Each local office of the Department of Social Services will investigate reports of abuse, neglect and exploitation of adults aged 60 and over and incapacitated adults over 18 years of age and provide a wide variety of health, housing, social and legal services to stop the mistreatment or prevent further mistreatment. You can visit http://www.dss.virginia.gov/localagency/ to find how to contact your local Department of Social Services.
Services offered may include home-based care, transportation, adult day services, adult foster care, nutrition services and legal intervention.
May is Adult Abuse Prevention Month.
