Who We Are
The H.E.R. Shelter is a private, non-profit agency, certified by the United Way of South Hampton Roads and the statewide coalition, Virginians Against Domestic Violence. The H.E.R. Shelter provides emergency housing and related services to women and children who are victims of domestic violence. Other services include counseling, goal coaching, help finding a job, and help finding housing. A shelter is presently located in Portsmouth and in Chesapeake.
The Shelter is a 30-day emergency facility for domestic violence victims and homeless individuals as well as their children. The Shelter can house up to 42 women and children at one time and has 15 rooms, 6 bathrooms. Shelter meals are set by the requirements of the USDA Food programs
Other services provided: 24-hour hotline; children's program; aftercare program; court advocacy; trafficking and child trafficking.
Bus passes are available for clients. Clients can be picked up at the designated "drop-off point".
Eligible Residency: Primary is Portsmouth and Chesapeake, Virginia; Secondary is Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Suffolk, Hampton, and Newport News.
